TALKS, WORKSHOPS AND SCHOOL VISITS

WHAT I DO

I offer various talks and workshops, for both children and adults, in a venue of your choice.  For example, I have worked with schools, libraries, writers’ groups, teacher training establishments and museums.  I have a number of tried-and-tested talks or workshops but I am also happy to create a talk or workshop to suit the needs of your group.

I am available for talks or workshops at conferences and literary festivals.  Previous festival appearances include Edinburgh, Dublin and the Northern Children’s Book Festival. Most recently, I ran creative writing workshops as part of the Orange Young Writers’ Festival and gave talks at a number of ‘Read to Inspire’ conferences across the UK (for more information on these conferences contact Nikki Gamble by visiting www.writeaway.org.uk).
I’m also happy to take on longer residencies.  Recent appointments include a year-long residency with Seven Stories, the Centre for Children’s Books in Newcastle.  I am currently working with a group of adults and a group of children, for the Museum of my Life project organised by New Writing North.

“Thank you for your positive encouragement, patience and sense of humour.  We’ve had a lovely time!”
“A huge ‘thank you’.  You’ve given us lots of inspiration.”
“A great project.”

The age ranges suggested are approximate.  All talks and workshops can be adjusted to suit your group.

PIE-CATS AND PIZZAS: ways of kick-starting creativity

OR
A story-making workshop (2 hours)

Using my books Glint and the Dream Team series for illustration and inspiration, I share my story-making ideas and get the children creating their own group stories.  In workshops the children will also begin to produce individual prose pieces, including a story-shape and an opening paragraph.

A poetry-writing workshop (2 hours)

A combination of group work and individual writing based on the place where they live, leading to both individual poems and a whole group poem.

‘It was a real pleasure meeting you and working with you.  I’m so glad you were able to take up this project as I’ve had so much positive feedback.  It seems that the progression in the students’ writing following your sessions has been marked too.’

BOOKS

Children often like to have a signed copy of a book by a visiting author.  Your local bookshop is usually happy to supply books for an author event (but please give them plenty of notice) – and you may be able to negotiate a small discount.

COST

For school and library visits I charge the rates recommended by New Writing North - £150 for a half day or £200 for a full day, plus travel expenses.  You may like to consider sharing a visit with another local school to help spread the cost.
(N.B.  If you are a small school or wish me to talk to a small group, I can be flexible.  Please get in touch to discuss.)

All other groups/venues, please get in touch to discuss fees.  Book Festival Organisers, if you would prefer to contact my publishers please go to the Contacts page.
